Adult Child & Parent Relationships

The relationships that parents have with their children who are no longer children are unique and often complex. Sometimes we seem to slide seamlessly into this next stage of life and relationship and other times it feels complicated, emotionally charged, and leaves us questioning.

Family therapy with adult children and their parents is aimed at supporting a positive relationship in and throughout the various stages of adulthood. Maintaining a balance of connection, communication, and expectations is no small feat when you are also considering the needs, beliefs, and expectations of significant others, extended family, and/or children — all in addition to your own. Now throw in a difference in political or religious beliefs, stress from a pandemic, and a new baby and you have a space ripe for tension and disagreement!

And it doesn’t have to knock you down and out. Really.

In family therapy, I aim to support you in:

  • Resolving long standing conflict

  • Expressing and understanding different ideas, expectations, and beliefs

  • Establishing boundaries and connection

  • Improving communication habits

  • Achieving a “good enough”, if not thriving, parent-child relationship that works for each of you

Whether you want to come to therapy just 1 parent and 1 child or as a family of 8+, I will meet with you each individually and then as a family and support you in meeting your goals. Let’s get started.
